Curriculum Vitae of U Nay Oke

• born on 11th September, 1946 in Myaung, a town in Sagaing region, Myanmar.

• the only son of U Ba Tint I.C.S., permanent secretary in the Ministry of Defense and Daw Khin Saw Mu, a renowned Myanmar poet.

• studied at St. Paul’s Institute, a Catholic missionary education centre in Yangon; passed the government matriculation examination with distinctions in 1961.

• pursued further studies at University of Yangon; obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1965, a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967, a diploma in French language in 1969, a Master of Arts degree in English in 1972.

• while in high school, translated short stories from English to Myanmar language; wrote many articles and treatises on international cinema; made a name as a leading film critic in local magazines and journals while in college.

• in 1965, appointed assistant director in charge of selecting foreign movies to be screened in Myanmar by the Ministry of Information.

• in 1968, joined the Faculty of English at the University of Yangon as a lecturing tutor

• in 1976, left government service to establish the Institute of English which became the biggest and most successful private language school in Myanmar, teaching English language to over 5000 local students each year. Many students who studied at the Institute have since become Ministers and Deputy Ministers in the government, generals in the Myanmar Armed Forces, high officials in various government departments, Myanmar ambassadors to various countries; successful doctors, lawyers and engineers; leading business tycoons; popular actors, actresses, singers and dancers: prominent politicians, writers and journalists.

• today, actively participating in the civil society: doing humanitarian work with various local as well as international organizations in health and education sectors; Sitting on the boards of several NGOs, schools and vocational institutes; providing staff and teaching materials to free-tuition schools and monastic schools across the country; conducting training courses for language teachers; making appearances on television talk-shows on education;

• is the Chief Co-ordinator of the Education Network of the National League for Democracy, co-ordinating the community schools in the network with international educational institutions and non-governmental organizations.

• has established an Education Foundation for Under-privileged Students which will provide scholarship funds to underprivileged students from all over the country to enable them to attend schools, colleges or vocational institutes and find them suitable jobs upon their graduation.

• wrote several books on the study of English for high school students; published books of scholastic essays for high school as well as college students; read papers on the teaching of English at seminars and workshops;

• giving weekly English lessons on the Education Channel of Skynet, Myanmar’s most popular television network; the programme is followed by hundreds of thousands of English teachers and learners all over the country;

• going on lecture tours all over the country, distributing handbooks for high school English teachers and giving lectures on the teaching of English in public as well as private high schools.

• co-ordinating with the Ministry of Education for the establishment of international schools and colleges in Myanmar and helping in the nationwide educational reforms.
